Aerospace

Aerospace is one of the most important industries in the world, with aircraft and spacecraft manufacturers plus defense contractors building and servicing highly valuable and specialized equipment. Various components of this industry operate in explosive atmospheres, where only purpose-built devices like the aegex10TM Intrinsically Safe Tablet can be used. The aegex10TM IS Tablet gives personnel in volatile aerospace manufacturing locations the ability to communicate in real-time via Windows 10 and Microsoft IoT applications. Augmented reality contact among crew members, instant transmission and analysis of data, and synchronized access to corporate IT systems and security, are available to workers using Aegex tablets across an entire aerospace organization. Because less volatile areas of aerospace manufacturing can suddenly become extremely volatile in the case of an emergency, only the aegex10TM with its C1D1 and ATEX/IECEx Zone 1 certifications is able to operate in these highly explosive environments. With teams carrying Aegex tablets, and Aegex tablets forming the basis for an Internet of Things in hazardous locations, an entire aerospace operation can operate more safely and efficiently, mitigating risk and improving productivity. Case Study

An aircraft manufacturer is painting its new fleet of planes in a 30,000 square-foot paint hangar using high-powered sprayers and other equipment that emit toxic and flammable paint fumes. Though there is a state-of- the-art duct network for air evacuation and a containment system for liquids, the atmosphere is still volatile enough to prohibit any non-certified electronic devices from being used in the area due to risk of explosion. Any devices used must also be protected against moisture and particulate ingress.

Planes must be stripped or sanded every four years in order to be repainted, involving powerful equipment and producing dust and other potentially combustible particulates. Hundreds of pieces of equipment and materials must be purchased, inventoried and reordered. Air quality must be continually monitored to protect workers. All processes that cannot be monitored by sensors have traditionally been completed by hand using pen and paper since handheld electronics could produce a spark sufficient to cause an explosion. Without a cloud-connected mobile device, documentation, and other processes take a considerable amount of time because they cannot be completed on site.

The aegex10TM Intrinsically Safe Tablet provides a solution. Certified for Class I, II, III Division 1 and ATEX/IECEx Zone 1 hazardous areas, these tablets are incapable of producing energy sufficient to cause a spark; thus, they are safe to use in the most hazardous zones of the paint hangar. The tablets allow the aircraft painting crew to use specialty apps that detect wear and tear in the paint, monitor air quality in conjunction with sensors and be alerted of abnormalities and monitor the crew’s health on site. They are also able to track inventory and order materials on site.

Personnel can refer to digital or online manuals on the tablet, can communicate in real-time with augmented reality applications like Skype for Business, as well as access email, Windows software, and any cloud-based services they might need during the job. Their tablets are protected by the same security protocols as their company-wide IT systems. They also enjoy the same Microsoft support as the rest of their organization.

The aegex10TM IS Tablet allows aerospace teams to complete their work, monitor conditions and get support more quickly and easily than ever before.
